With its epicentre in Es Pujols, the 15K Formentera Sunset Run will celebrate its second edition this weekend. Around 2,300 runners will take part, surpassing last year’s numbers and confirming the event as one of the most sought-after popular races on the Spanish calendar. Quite an achievement for such a young race, yet one filled with so many attractions for every runner.
One of the main charms of the 15K Formentera Sunset Run is its evening schedule, which allows participants to enjoy the Formentera sunset while running through its stunning landscapes. It’s an unforgettable moment — one that stays in every runner’s memory.
The main race will once again cover 15 kilometres, starting at 6:00 p.m. The route will lead runners through some of the island’s most beautiful spots, such as L’Estany des Peix, La Savina and L’Estany Pudent. Meanwhile, the 5K Sunset Run will set off from the Port of Formentera, sharing the same finish line in Es Pujols as its big sister. Offering two distances allows runners of all levels and abilities to take part in the event.
A weekend of sport and island experiences
Formentera’s paradisiacal setting is also the perfect backdrop for a weekend full of parallel activities. On Saturday, 11 October, the exclusive ‘Run & Coffee’ session will debut — led by Eric Domingo and Pau Capdevila, and joined by the Frolik running group — limited to just 200 participants. Over the weekend, runners can also enjoy a yoga masterclass by the sea, a kayak or paddle surf session from Espalmador, a bus tour around the island, and, to wrap up the experience, a Sunday lunch at the charismatic Fandango restaurant, featuring live DJ music.
A more international race with strong female participation
Thanks to its growing reputation across Europe, Formentera has become one of the favourite destinations for sports enthusiasts. In its first edition, 20% of the participants came from abroad. This year, that number rises even further: runners from twelve countries make up 27% of the total field. Italy leads the international presence with nearly 10% of all participants, followed by France (2%) and the Netherlands (1.9%). Athletes will also arrive from the United States, Ireland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Russia, Venezuela, Germany, Belgium and Colombia.
The number of female participants has also increased compared to 2024, reaching 60% of the total field — a remarkable figure unmatched by any other Spanish race. Across both distances (15K and 5K), there will be more women than men on the start line.
A race that unites sport, territory and tourism promotion
This Wednesday, 8 October, the official presentation of the race took place at the Consell de Formentera, attended by local authorities and members of the organising team.
Francisco Larrey, CEO of Talentum, the organising company, highlighted that “in just two years this event has become an experiential benchmark, with tremendous acceptance among athletes who once again sold out all race bibs. The innovative ‘Sunset’ concept on such a magical island not only strengthens national sports tourism but also attracts runners from other countries. We’re proud of these figures, which also result from our presence at European running expos and the close collaboration with specialised tour operators throughout the year. Without a doubt, the 15K Formentera Sunset Run is a desaisonalised event that extends Formentera’s tourist season, welcoming around 5,000 visitors between runners and companions, and directly benefiting sectors such as hospitality and catering.”
Meanwhile, Óscar Portas, President of the Consell Insular de Formentera, stated: “The 15K Formentera Sunset Run is not only a sporting experience, but also an emotional one that showcases the beauty of our sunsets and our unique landscapes. This event strengthens Formentera’s image as an ideal setting for distinctive, sustainable and nature-connected races.”
Artal Mayans, Councillor for Tourism, added: “In Formentera, we are committed to desaisonalisation as a way to strengthen both the beginning and the end of the tourist season, offering visitors activities and attractions all year round. Sport is a safe bet in this regard. With a new event like the 15K Sunset Run, we’ve shown that Formentera is much more than sun and beaches — it’s also a perfect destination for those seeking active experiences in a unique natural environment. This event opens a window to show the world another side of Formentera — quieter, mild in temperature, and ideal for those looking for a peaceful escape from city life.”
Finally, Hugo Martínez, Councillor for Sports, expressed his gratitude to the organising committee and volunteers: “They make possible an event that combines sport, community and territory, placing Formentera as a key destination on the sporting calendar and offering magical routes with the sunset as a backdrop.”
Francesco Bellini, Commercial Director of Trasmapi, added: “It’s a pleasure to be part of the 15K Formentera Sunset Run once again, an event that perfectly embodies the spirit of the island: sport, nature and authenticity. October is a very special month in Formentera — when light, temperature and atmosphere invite you to enjoy the island in a different way: active, healthy and unhurried. We’ve been connecting Formentera for over 50 years, accompanying those who love it all year round. Supporting events like this reaffirms our commitment to the island, promoting sport, healthy lifestyles and sustainable tourism that preserves its essence.”
Thus, the island is ready to welcome a sporting and tourist event that promises to consolidate its place on the calendar and become one of Formentera’s most essential annual experiences.
