The 15K Formentera Sunset Run will once again bring together sport and sustainability along the same course.
For its second edition, taking place on October 11, the organization has made a donation to the Save Posidonia Project, an initiative led by the Consell Insular of Formentera focused on preserving Posidonia oceanica—a marine plant essential for the environmental balance of the Mediterranean.
This financial contribution adds to the individual donations participants can make during the registration process and represents another step in the event’s commitment to protecting the island’s natural surroundings.
Launched in 2017, the Save Posidonia Project has already enabled the sponsorship of more than 130,000 square meters of posidonia meadows in Formentera’s waters. Its efforts have raised international awareness about the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems.
Posidonia oceanica, declared a World Heritage Site within the Natural Park of Ses Salines of Ibiza and Formentera, is responsible for the turquoise color of the waters and plays a vital role in oxygen production, CO₂ absorption, and coastal protection against erosion. Despite its importance, this plant is seriously threatened by uncontrolled anchoring, discharges, and pollution.
With this donation, the 15K Formentera Sunset Run reaffirms its intention to be more than just a race: a unique sunset running experience that also seeks to generate a positive impact on the island, promoting respect for the environment and contributing to its active conservation.
